Week 7

What an exciting day! From our first hockey game, to Santa on the ice, to fire alarms and fire trucks!

Both the grade 2/3s and 4/5s had their first hockey game of the season. The groups were split into two and played with festive music playing in the background. Some students even got to suit up as goalie!

Near the end the game, Santa made an appearance. Boy is he ever a good skater! Who knew?

While we were all getting changed at the end of ice time, we were all surprised when the fire alarm went off. I have never seen the grade 2/3 boys get changed so quickly! The building was quickly surveyed and, luckily, we didn't have to exit the building. However the fire department still came and some of the fire fighters even held the door open for some of our hockey players as we loaded up the buses. It was all very exciting!

Please remember that this was the last practice before winter break. We resume January 12th.

Week 6

This week our hockey players worked hard on their skills!

The grade 2/3s worked on their balance and agility on their skates by stepping over hockey sticks and sliding underneath. I witnessed some pretty impressive skating today! Check out our Instagram photos!

The grade 4/5s practiced passing, skating backwards and shooting on net. I am so proud of all of our hockey players!

What Happens in a Blizzard?

Wow, what a crazy day of weather in Winnipeg! Mother Nature sure was sending us a message today!

Since the weather was so bad today, buses were cancelled. In that case WJHA was cancelled for the day. I will send out a "Remind" if I know if hockey will be cancelled for us. If this happens, your child will need to bring a lunch to school.

Weeks 4 and 5

If you happened to be able to come to the first skate of the season, you will be amazed at the improvements in all the hockey players!

It was endearing to see the new grade 2/3 hockey players playing follow the leader behind their coach like baby ducks and playing "red light green light" (and during "red light" they flop down onto the ice!)

The grade 4/5 hockey players are getting faster and faster and faster!

Many of our hockey players were complaining of headaches at the last practice. A headache can be caused my many factors. To make sure you child is ready and well for practice, make sure they are drinking plenty of water. It is recommended that children aged 4 - 8 years old drink 5 cups of water each day, and children aged 9 - 13 drink 7 or 8 cups of water each day. If they are active (like playing hockey), they should drink even more.

Some signs of dehydration include:

  • dry or cracked lips
  • headache
  • sleepiness
  • grumpiness
  • dry skin
  • low energy levels
Please make sure you child is getting enough to drink!

Week Three

Today was a great hockey day!

In the grade 2/3 boys change room, the boys are becoming so confident with getting dressed that they are helping one another get their equipment on and off. What great team work!

The grade 2/3's are buzzing with excitement as they can see how much they are improving each time!

The grade 4/5's are busy doing drills to improve their skating and working with sticks and pucks. I saw lots of tired hockey players today. They were working hard! Remember to fuel your hockey player with lots of long lasting energy (protein and whole grain carbohydrates), and encourage them to drink lots of water.

They grade 4/5's have been learning about eating healthy in health class. You can ask them about the four food groups and the amount of servings they need according to Canada's Food Guide.

Your family can explore Canada's Food Guide together using this link:

Week 2

Check out our pictures on our Instagram account! Hockey today was very exciting. In just one week, everyone can see development in their skills. From getting dressed more quickly, to finally being able to stand up on their skates, to finally getting a chance to play with the pucks!

When I asked one student if he had fun today, his response was "Yes, crazy fun"!

Next Monday will be the first after school session for our grade 4/5 WJHA students. Students will stay at school to participate in classroom work (to learn more about the game of hockey), floorball in the gym, and dinner.

Our First Skate!

Wow! What a great day!

Our students did so well preparing for hockey. They knew where to go, how to get organized. I spent most of my time with the grade 2/3s today, and they did so well putting on their equipment! It took a little longer than it normally would to get dressed which meant that we were on the ice for a shorter amount of time than we normally would. With practice, this will all change.

Most students remembered to bring a change of clothes which were very useful because the students were very sweaty after their time on the ice. We have sent the used clothing home today. Please wash and send them back on Monday so we can have our bags packed well in advance.

For our new grade 2/3s, most of the time was spent on the ice, literally. This is completely fine and perfectly normal. Getting a feel for skating will take some time, and students will improve at all different rates. By the third of fourth skate, I am sure you child will start to feel more comfortable on their skates.

Thanks to all family and friends that came to support your children. They were very excited to see you. If you know that you won't be able to make it out to any practices, you can send me a message at school so I can be sure to take some pictures and post them on Instagram for you!

Congratulations to all the students for their best effort on the ice!

First Week of Hockey!

Hooray! The time has finally come! This Thursday will be the first day of hockey! While many students are excited to finally get on the ice, many of our students will be on the ice for only a very short amount of time this week. This is because it usually takes new players a long time to learn how to get dressed. As the year continues, and with more practice, the students will learn how to dress more quickly.

Remember, you are very welcome to come watch your child during practices on Thursdays at the MTS Iceplex 12:40pm - 1:40pm.

Please remember to help your child be ready by encouraging 9 - 11 hours of sleep per night, drinking lots of water and eating healthy meals.

Getting Dressed

Today some of our veteran players helped our new players practice getting dressed in their hockey equipment. Boy do we need to practice!!

Here is a link I found on Youtube showing a boy getting dressed for hockey. It might be helpful to show this to your child a few times to remind them how it is done.

Hockey Season Begins!

Today we went on our first trip to the MTS Iceplex!

We didn't get a chance to get on the ice today, but everyone was sized up and equipment chosen for each student, hockey sticks were measured and cut, and everything was put in their hockey bag. Our equipment will be dropped off at school later this week.

While we wait for our first ice time (Thursday October 27th), we will practice putting on our equipment and carrying our bags so we are ready for our first day!

Please remember to help your child be ready for hockey by providing healthy meals and schedule 9-11 hours of sleep every night.
